Stemless Bong: How It Works, Pros and Cons, What to Buy

Stemless Bong: How It Works, Pros and Cons, What to Buy

Stemless tubes we stock: 16 inch 360 Grid Cap Tube, 18 inch Quad Stem Tree Perc, 16 inch Grid Stem Recycler and 12 inch Peyote Pillar Tube on white

Quick Answer: A stemless bong has the stem fused into the glass, so there’s no removable downstem. The bowl seats straight into the joint, and smoke runs down the fixed stem into the water. You get less drag and no downstem to lose or size. The catch: you can’t swap the stem. Every tube here takes an 18mm bowl.

A stemless bong skips the removable downstem and builds the stem right into the glass. Here’s how it works, what it trades away, what bowl it takes and which tubes are worth buying.

Quick brief

What should you know before you buy?

Four facts that decide whether stemless fits the way you smoke.

  • The stem is part of the glass. There’s no downstem to lose, crack or buy in the wrong length.
  • It tends to pull easier. The smoke path is short and fixed, and the perc is built around the stem.
  • Plan on an 18mm bowl. Every tube in this guide has an 18mm joint. A reducer lets you run your 14mm bowls.
  • The stem can’t be swapped. If it cracks, the piece is done. Treat it like it matters.

The basics

What is a stemless bong?

The stem is built into the glass, and the bowl drops straight into the joint.

A stemless bong is a bong with the stem fused into the body instead of a removable downstem. The bowl seats in a joint on the glass, and smoke runs down that fixed stem into the water.

A regular bong has three parts: the body, the downstem and the bowl. The downstem carries smoke from the bowl down under the water. A stemless piece keeps that path but welds it in place. So you’re down to two parts, the bong and the bowl.

You’ll also see it called a fixed stem bong. A stemline is a stemless style where slits cut into the fixed stem do the diffusing. A gridded stemline uses a grid of small slits, which splits the smoke into lots of small bubbles.

Since the stem’s already locked in place, many stemless pieces add a perc at the base. Our stemless bongs run from gridded stemlines to tree percs.

Shop tubes

Which stemless bongs are worth a look?

Eight tubes from $79.99 to $129.99, each with an 18mm joint.

Every tube here is stemless, 12 to 18 inches tall and built with an 18mm joint. Pick by the perc and the height you want.

Want the whole range? Browse the stemless series or every percolator bong we carry. Check the joint size on any tube that isn’t listed here, since not every stemless piece is 18mm.

Stemless vs downstem

How is a stemless bong different from a downstem bong?

Same job, a shorter parts list.

The difference is whether the stem comes out. A downstem bong uses a removable stem you can swap, while a stemless bong has it fused in, so there’s one less part to fit, lose or break.

A downstem gets sized two ways: the joint and the length. Get the length wrong and the slits sit too high or too deep in the water. A stemless tube takes that off the table. You only match the bowl to the joint.

If you like swapping in diffused downstems, a stemmed piece is more flexible. It’s the tinkerer’s pick. Our beaker vs straight tube breakdown covers the body shapes on both sides.

Trade-offs

What are the pros and cons of a stemless bong?

What you gain, and what you give up.

The pros are less drag, fewer parts and no downstem to size. The cons are that you can’t swap the stem, and a crack in it ends the piece.

What you gain:

  • Less drag. The smoke path is short and fixed, so stemless tubes tend to pull easier.
  • Nothing to lose. No downstem rolls off the table or goes missing after a clean.
  • A perc built for the stem. The stem and perc are designed together, from gridded stemlines to tree percs.

What you give up:

  • No swapping. Want different diffusion? You’d need a different bong.
  • One part you can’t replace. If the fixed stem cracks, you can’t pop in a new one. The piece is done.
  • An 18mm joint. If your bowls are all 14mm, you’ll need a reducer.

18mm fit

What size bowl does a stemless bong take?

Match the bowl to the joint and you’re set.

Every stemless tube in this guide has an 18mm female joint, so it takes an 18mm male bowl. Most of them include one.

14mm is the most common joint, and 18mm is the size for bigger bongs. Got a drawer full of 14mm bowls? Drop a reducer into the joint. The 18mm-14mm Faceted Reducer Adapter is $14.99 and turns an 18mm joint into a 14mm one.

Want a spare? The 18mm Horn Screen Bowl is $19.99 with a built-in screen. The 18mm Clear Horn Bowl w/ Wart is $24.99.

Don’t buy a downstem for a stemless tube. There’s nowhere for it to go. Our bong bowl sizes guide covers 10mm, 14mm and 18mm in full, and the bowls and downstems page has the rest.

No Downstem To Lose. A 16 inch stemless gridded stemline tube with a natty neck and an 18mm bowl on a white background. Shop stemless bongs.

Water level

How much water goes in a stemless bong?

Cover the slits, then stop.

Fill it until the water sits just above the slits on the fixed stem or perc. That’s the same rule as a downstem bong, because the smoke has to pass through water on the way up.

Too little and the smoke skips the water. Too much and you’ll pull splash toward your mouth. Here’s the routine:

  1. Pull the bowl, then pour water in through the mouthpiece.
  2. Stop once the slits on the stem or perc are covered.
  3. Take a dry pull with nothing packed. If water splashes up the neck, pour a little out.
  4. Pack the bowl, light it and pull until the tube fills. Then pull the bowl to clear it.

That last step works the same on any bong. Pulling the bowl opens the joint, and the smoke in the tube comes out in one go.

Perc choice

Which perc should you pick in a stemless bong?

The perc sets how the hit feels.

Pick a gridded stemline for a light pull, a tree perc or dome for more diffusion, and a recycler if you take smaller hits. The stem’s fixed either way, so the perc is the real choice.

  • Gridded stemline. Small slits cut into the stem break the smoke into lots of little bubbles.
  • Tree perc. A center trunk with arms coming down. Smoke goes up the trunk, then down through the arms and the water.
  • Dome or grid cap. A cap sits over the stem, and smoke leaves through slits in it before it rises.
  • Recycler. Water cycles up and back down through side tubes, so you get a longer hit.

Our types of bong percolators guide goes deeper on each style. For the why behind it, read what a percolator does in a bong.

From the Counter — Straight tube or recycler?

Here’s how I’d split it. A perc straight tube has a lot less drag than a recycler. You milk the chamber, then clear it when you pull the bowl.

A recycler gives you a longer hit. The water bubbles through the whole piece and comes back down like a waterfall, so it’s smoother, with more flavor.

I’d point you to a recycler if you take smaller hits or you’re dabbing out of it.

Cleaning

How do you clean a stemless bong?

The stem doesn’t come out, so you shake it clean.

You clean a stemless bong by shaking cleaning solution through it, since the stem can’t come out. Pull the bowl, dump the water, add solution, plug the openings and shake.

  1. Pull the bowl and dump the old water.
  2. Pour cleaner in through the mouthpiece. Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt is the classic mix.
  3. Cover the mouthpiece and the joint, then shake so the solution runs through the stem and perc.
  4. Rinse with warm water until the smell’s gone.

Clean it often. Fresh resin rinses out fast, but baked-on resin inside a fixed stem is a pain. Our how to clean a bong guide has the full method, and the bong cleaner page has the gear.

Why most guides get this wrong

Some guides say stemless bongs are easier to clean. Others say they’re harder. Both are half right. There’s no downstem to pull, soak and scrub, so there’s less to take apart.

But the stem’s fixed, so you can’t get a brush inside it. You shake solution through it instead. That means cleaning it more often, before resin bakes on. It doesn’t mean cleaning it less.

My pick

Which stemless bong would I actually buy?

A straight answer for a first stemless tube.

I’d buy the Roots Glass 16″ Stemless Tree Perc Tube at $99.99. It’s a tree perc welded to the bottom of a 16-inch tube, with an 18mm bowl in the box. Nothing to size, nothing to lose.

Want more going on? The 16″ Stemless 360 Grid Cap Tube is $129.99 and adds a grid cap and a splash guard in the neck. On a tighter budget, the 18″ Dual Gridded Horseshoe Stemline is $79.99 with a horn bowl.

Take small hits? Get the 16″ Grid Stem Recycler Bong at $119.99. Our recycler bong guide explains how the water loop works. Stuck on height? The what size bong should I buy guide sorts that out.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask before they buy a stemless tube.

What is a stemless bong?

A stemless bong has the stem fused into the glass instead of a removable downstem. The bowl seats straight into a joint on the body, and smoke runs down the fixed stem into the water or a perc. It’s two parts, the bong and the bowl, instead of three.

What is the difference between a stemless bong and a downstem bong?

A downstem bong uses a removable stem you can swap or replace. A stemless bong has the stem built in, so there’s nothing to size or lose, and it tends to pull with less drag. The catch is that a cracked fixed stem can’t be replaced.

How much water goes in a stemless bong?

Fill it until the water sits just above the slits on the fixed stem or perc. Then take a dry pull with an empty bowl seated. If water splashes toward your mouth, pour a little out.

Is a stemless bong harder to clean?

It’s different, not harder. There’s no downstem to pull and scrub, but you can’t get a brush inside the fixed stem either. Plug the openings and shake cleaning solution through it, and clean it often so resin doesn’t bake on. Our how to clean a bong guide has the full method.

What is a stemline bong?

A stemline is a stemless tube whose fixed stem has slits or a grid cut into it, which breaks the smoke into small bubbles. The Roots Glass 16 inch Stemless Gridded Stemline w/ Natty Neck is $89.99.

What size bowl does a stemless bong take?

Every stemless tube in this guide has an 18mm joint, so it takes an 18mm male bowl, and most include one. If your bowls are 14mm, a reducer turns an 18mm joint into a 14mm one. The 18mm-14mm Faceted Reducer Adapter is $14.99.

Is a stemless bong good for beginners?

Yes, if you want fewer parts to deal with. There’s no downstem to size or lose, just the bong and an 18mm bowl. Handle it with care, since a crack in the fixed stem can’t be fixed with a new stem.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Straight tube bongs have a chamber that fills up quickly and pulls smoke faster when you inhale. Beaker bongs, on the other hand, have a larger water chamber, allowing for more laid-back hits when you tilt them back, but they require a stronger pull when inhaling.
