How to pick a bong

A bong is a water pipe — pull smoke through water, water cools and filters, you inhale. Simple in concept, real differences in execution.

The shape decides the feel. A beaker base holds more water and pulls smoother. A straight tube has a faster, snappier hit. Mini bongs are easy to clean and store. Tall bongs deliver maximum cooling. Stemless bongs run tighter pulls with no removable parts.

The perc is the upgrade. Diffused downstem is the floor — adequate filtration, low drag. Tree, honeycomb, matrix, and Swiss percs all break smoke into smaller bubbles for smoother hits, with progressively more drag the more diffusion they add.

Thickness is durability. 5mm survives normal life. 7mm survives rough roommates. 9mm survives a lot more than that. We don’t sell thinner than 5mm — not worth it for the people we make this for.

Bong vs. straight tube vs. beaker — what’s actually different?

Same general principle, different feels. Beakers hold more water and pull smoother. Straight tubes pull snappier and clean faster. The shape matters more than the height for how it actually hits.

How much water should I put in a bong?

Just above the downstem holes — usually about an inch of water. Too little and the smoke doesn’t filter. Too much and it splashes into your mouth. Soft test pull with no flame; you should see clean bubbles.

How do I clean a bong?

Iso (91%+) and coarse salt. Pour both in, cap the openings, shake hard for 2 minutes. Rinse with hot water. Do it weekly if you smoke regularly.

Why does my bong taste bad?

Either dirty water (change it every session) or built-up resin (full clean overdue). If you cleaned recently and it still tastes off, check the bowl piece — they trap resin even when the bong looks clean.

Bong height vs. hit size

Height changes both lung capacity and cooling. Quick guide:

• 6–10 inch mini bongs — quick session, easy clean, faster pulls.
• 10–14 inch standard — daily-use sweet spot.
• 14–18 inch tall — bigger lung capacity, smoother cooling, less portable.
• 18 inch+ — home-only piece. Maximum smoothness, maximum tipping risk.

Ice catchers and what they actually do

An ice catcher is a glass pinch in the neck that holds ice cubes above the water. Smoke passes through the chilled ice on its way up, dropping the temperature 10–20°F at your lips. Worth it on tall bongs; less impactful on minis (not enough travel distance).

Common bong perc combos

• Tree + ice catcher — smooth pull plus extra cooling. Classic combo.
• Honeycomb + showerhead — multi-stage diffusion, very smooth, bigger drag.
• Diffused downstem only — minimum filtration, snappiest pull.

What’s the right water level for a bong?

Just covering the downstem holes — about an inch above the bottom of the diffuser. Soft test pull (no flame); you should see steady bubbles, no splashing into the mouthpiece.

How long does a quality bong last?

Treated well, indefinitely. Borosilicate doesn’t degrade. The breaks come from drops, tip-overs, or heat shock. The bowl piece and downstem are the parts that wear out — both are replaceable.

Does adding ice change how the bong hits?

Yes — cooler smoke means you can take longer pulls without coughing. Big hits feel smoother but you’re inhaling the same total amount.
