How a quartz banger works

A quartz banger is the bowl of a dab rig. Concentrate goes in, torch heats the outside, vapor comes off the inside. Quartz is the right material because it heats evenly, cools predictably, and doesn’t impart flavor like ceramic or titanium can.

Banger types

• Flat top bangers — the standard. Flat-bottomed bucket, simple and forgiving. Best for beginners.
• Slurper bangers — slot at the bottom that draws concentrate down into a chamber, then back up through holes. More efficient vaporization. Need terp pillars or marbles.
• Tower bangers — add a center post for spinning pearls. Better heat distribution.
• Full-weld bangers — hand-fused for stronger joint connections and even heat retention. Cost more, last longer.

Heating cycle

Torch the bottom for 30–45 seconds, let cool 30–60 seconds, drop the dab, cap. Thicker bangers need longer cool-down. Don’t dab on a red-hot banger — chazzes the quartz, ruins the flavor.

Why are quartz bangers better than titanium or ceramic?

Cleaner flavor. Titanium can leave a metallic taste; ceramic heats unevenly and breaks easier. Quartz is neutral — your dab tastes like the dab, not the bowl.

How do I clean a quartz banger?

Q-tip swab while still warm after every dab. Once a week, do a full soak in 91%+ iso. If it’s chazzed (cloudy bottom), heat it red-hot, let it fully cool, then iso soak.

What size banger do I need?

Match the joint size of your rig — 10mm for mini rigs, 14mm for most rigs, 18mm for some full-size pieces. Bucket diameter is preference (25mm and 30mm are common).

Why does my banger taste burnt?

Either dabbing too hot (let it cool longer), the banger is chazzed (deep clean or replace), or your concentrate is contaminated.

Bottom thickness — why it matters

The bottom of the banger (the flat surface concentrate sits on) varies in thickness from 2mm to 6mm. Thicker bottoms hold heat longer (better for low-temp dabs) but take longer to heat. Thinner bottoms heat fast but cool faster too. 4mm is the standard sweet spot.

Top vs. bottom heating

Most dabbers heat the bottom of the banger. Some heat the side. Side heating preserves the bottom from chazz longer but takes a few extra seconds. Bottom heating is the default for a reason — fastest, most predictable.

Seasoning a new banger

New quartz bangers benefit from “seasoning” before first use:

1. Heat the banger to medium temperature (not red-hot).
2. Drop a small dab onto the warm surface.
3. Let it vaporize without inhaling.
4. Q-tip the residue.
5. Repeat 2–3 times.

This builds a thin terpene layer that helps later dabs taste better and prevents shock-cracking on the first real hit.

Banger styles deeper

• Flat top — flat bottom, vertical sides. Universal, forgiving, beginner-friendly.
• Slurper — slot at bottom, secondary chamber, terp pillars required.
• Tower / blender — center post for spinning pearls, even heat.
• Terp slurper — slurper variant with different geometry, faster vaporization.
• Full weld — joint and bucket fused. Stronger, even heat retention, costs more.

Why is my banger cracked?

Thermal shock — usually from dropping cold water on a hot banger, or hot dabs on a cold banger. Always let bangers cool gradually.

Should I dab into a glowing-red banger?

No. Glowing red is 800°F+ — burns terpenes, harsh hits, chazzes the quartz. Wait 30–60 seconds after the glow disappears.

What’s chazz and how do I prevent it?

Chazz is a cloudy white or brown coating on the bottom of a banger from overheating concentrate residue. Prevention: swab between dabs, don’t dab too hot, deep clean weekly. Light chazz comes out with iso soaks; severe chazz means it’s time for a new banger.
