When you need an adapter

Joint sizes don’t always match. You bought a 14mm bong but want to run an 18mm banger. Your old downstem broke and the new one is the wrong gender. You want to add a drop-down to lower the bowl height. Adapters solve all of these.

Common conversions

• 14mm female to 18mm male — fits an 18mm banger on a 14mm bong joint.
• 10mm female to 14mm male — fits a 14mm banger on a 10mm mini rig.
• Male to female reducers — converts the gender of your joint.
• Drop-down adapters — adds vertical height between the bong joint and the banger (useful if your torch keeps hitting the bong).

Do glass adapters affect performance?

Slightly. Each joint adds a small chance for leak and reduces airflow marginally. But the alternative is buying a new bong every time you want to swap parts, so adapters are usually the right call.

How do I figure out my joint size?

Penny test: drop a US penny into a female joint. Falls halfway in = 18mm. Quarter of the way in = 14mm. Doesn’t fit at all = 10mm.

Will any adapter work for my Puffco?

What’s a drop-down adapter for?

Adds vertical height between your bong joint and your banger so your torch doesn’t accidentally hit (and crack) your bong. Critical if you’ve ever tweaked the bong while heating.

Adapter angles

• 90-degree adapter — straight conversion, no angle change.
• 45-degree adapter — angles the new joint forward (toward you).
• Drop-down adapter — extends the joint downward to lower the bowl/banger height.

When to use a drop-down

If your torch keeps hitting the bong while heating the banger, a drop-down adds vertical clearance. Common on tall bongs being used as dab rigs.
