What makes a rig “heady”

The word “heady” means handmade, individually finished, often with color or sculpting work that takes real time on the torch. A production rig comes off a line. A heady rig is one specific build, made by one person, usually signed.

That doesn’t mean a heady rig hits harder than a production rig. It means you’re paying for the design, the work, and the fact that nobody else has the same piece.

What heady glass usually looks like

• Color work — wig wags, opal inserts, sandblasted patterns, layered fumes
• Sculpted accents — marbles, dichro, sculpted glass figures

What you pay for

Time. A heady rig takes 8–40 hours of skilled glass work versus 30 minutes for a production rig. The price reflects the labor.
