What “thick” actually means

Glass thickness in bongs is measured at the wall. 5mm is the standard for daily-use glass. Thick glass starts at 7mm and tops out around 9mm in most production pieces. The difference between 5mm and 9mm isn’t subtle. A 5mm beaker weighs maybe a pound. A 9mm at the same size weighs over two.

What thicker glass actually does

• Survives drops. A 5mm bong cracks from a knock-over onto a hardwood floor. A 9mm bong dents the floor.
• Handles heat better. Thicker walls absorb thermal shock when hot smoke hits cold water.
• Feels solid. Heavier in the hand, less wobble on the table.
• Lasts longer. Most cheap bongs fail at the joint or the base. Thick glass holds up at both.

What thicker glass doesn’t do

• It doesn’t make the smoke better. The hit comes from the design, not the wall thickness.
• It doesn’t make a cheap perc into a good one.

Are thicker bongs better?

Better for durability and feel. Not better for the hit itself — that comes from the design. The right answer for most regular smokers: 5mm minimum, 7mm if you can swing it, 9mm if you want the piece to outlast everything else.

Is 7mm thick enough for daily use?

Yes — 7mm is the sweet spot. Heavy enough to survive real use, not so heavy it’s annoying to handle, priced reasonably.

Why do thick bongs cost more?

More glass = more material, more time on the lathe, more weight in shipping. A 9mm beaker uses roughly 2x the glass of a 5mm of the same size. Over the life of the piece, you pay less than buying multiple cheap replacements.

Do thick bongs hit different?

Same hit, different feel. The smoke path inside doesn’t change with wall thickness. What changes is the heat retention and the weight in your hand.
