Quick Answer: Bag the pipe with 90% or stronger isopropyl and coarse salt, shake it a minute or two and soak it 30 minutes. Then push a pipe cleaner through, rinse warm and air dry. For a small pipe, the Mini Pipe Perfect brush pack ($11.99) reaches the tight spots. A filthy pipe can take three rounds.
How to clean a glass pipe comes down to a solvent, a scrubber and a brush for the spots the soak can’t reach. Here’s the full method, what to use when you’re out of iso, and how often to do it.
Quick brief
What should you know before you buy?
Four facts that make every clean faster.
- Iso and coarse salt do most of the work. Use 90% or stronger, per Sunrise Dispensary.
- The soak won’t clear everything. The screen and the carb hole need a brush or a pipe cleaner.
- Heat is the risk, not the cleaner. Sunrise warns boiling water on cold glass can crack it.
- Small and often beats big and rare. A quick rinse after each session keeps resin from setting.
The supplies
What do you need to clean a glass pipe?
Most of it’s probably in your bathroom already.
To clean a glass pipe you need 90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol, coarse salt, a zip bag, and pipe cleaners or swabs. A small brush set helps on the screen and the carb hole.
- Isopropyl alcohol, 90% or higher. It’s the solvent. Sunrise Dispensary says 90% or higher works best.
- Coarse salt. It’s the scrubber. Dockside Cannabis uses about three parts iso to one part salt.
- A zip bag. The pipe soaks in it, so nothing spills.
- Pipe cleaners, swabs or brushes. The Mini Pipe Perfect Cleaning Brush Pack is a 6-piece set with micro tips for spots a soak can’t reach. 300 Glob Mops XL 2.0 swabs are $5.99.

The method
How do you clean a glass pipe with iso and salt?
Seven steps, in the order that saves you a second round.
Here’s how to clean a glass pipe: tap out the ash, bag it with iso and coarse salt, shake it, let it soak 30 minutes, brush out what’s left, rinse it warm and let it air dry.
- Tap it out. Turn the pipe over and knock loose ash and old bud out of the bowl.
- Bag it. Drop the pipe in a zip bag with enough iso to cover it, then add a good scoop of coarse salt.
- Shake it. Seal the bag and shake it for a minute or two, Sunrise Dispensary’s number. The salt scrubs while the alcohol breaks down resin.
- Let it soak. Leave heavy buildup for 30 minutes or longer.
- Brush it. Push a pipe cleaner or swab through the stem and the bowl.
- Rinse it warm. Rinse until you can’t smell alcohol. Warm, not boiling: Sunrise warns boiling water on cold glass can crack it.
- Air dry it. Let it dry fully before you pack it again.
Still brown inside? Run it again with fresh iso and salt.
From the Counter — my cleaning routine
Here’s how I do it. I warm the glass up with some hot water first.
If it’s something small like a pipe, it goes in a bag with iso and salt, and I shake it. If I’m cleaning a tube or a rig, I pour in a little iso, then the salt, plug each side and shake.
Then I rinse it out with water, thoroughly.
No iso
How do you clean a glass pipe without alcohol?
Backups for when the iso bottle’s empty.
Use a dedicated cleaner like Aneu Simple Soak for real resin. White vinegar handles lighter buildup, a slow simmer is the no-iso deep clean, and the dishwasher’s a no.
| Method | Best for | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Aneu Simple Soak | Hands-off soak | Rinse well |
| White vinegar soak | Light buildup | Weaker than iso |
| Slow simmer | Deep clean, no iso | Warm glass first |
| Dishwasher | Nothing | Can crack glass |
- Dedicated cleaners. Aneu Simple Soak is $17.99 for 32oz. Its listing says it works on glass, metal and silicone, hand pipes included, with no scrubbing. Aneu Shake to Shine is $10.99 and works the shake way.
- White vinegar. Head Magazine’s tip is to fill the piece with white vinegar and plug it. Sunrise rates vinegar and baking soda as weaker than alcohol but fine in a pinch.
- Simmering. Sunrise’s deep-clean option is a gentle 20-minute simmer, after you warm the glass up first.
- Skip the dishwasher. Sunrise says it can crack glass and leave detergent behind.

Small spots
How do you clean the screen and the carb hole?
The two places a soak leaves behind.
Push a thin brush or pipe cleaner through the screen holes and the carb from both sides after the soak, while the resin’s still soft from the alcohol.
A soak loosens resin everywhere, but tight spots hold on. Dockside’s fix for what’s left is simple: a toothpick, a bobby pin or a pipe cleaner, worked through until it’s clear.
- Built-in glass screens. Pipes like our Screen Spoon Pipe have the screen built into the bowl, so it can’t come out. Clear it from the bowl side with a thin brush.
- The carb hole. Our Sherlock Pipe has its carb on the side. Run a pipe cleaner through it so the carb works when you cover it.
Our spoon pipe guide explains how the carb and the screen work while you smoke.
The schedule
How often should you clean a glass pipe?
What the sources say, and where they disagree.
How often to clean a glass pipe depends on use. Rinse after every session if you can, deep clean weekly if you smoke daily, and every couple of weeks if you smoke now and then.
Sunrise Dispensary sets the bar at a weekly deep clean for regular users and every two weeks for light ones, with a rinse after each use. Dockside Cannabis says once a month.
The gap tells you something: there’s no magic number, so go by the glass. Resin you can see, a harsher pull or a smell that won’t go away all mean it’s time.
Sunrise also suggests a screen to cut down on debris. That’s the point of a pipe with one built in.
The disagreement
Why doesn’t one soak fix a dirty pipe?
The recipe isn’t the problem. The wait is.
Most guides make the iso soak sound like a one-shot fix. On a pipe that’s gone months, it isn’t, and the real fix is cleaning before it gets there.
Why most guides get this wrong: one soak isn’t a reset button
Most quick guides hand you the iso-and-salt recipe like one shake is the whole job. Dockside Cannabis actually ran it on a pipe that hadn’t been cleaned in years. Five minutes of shaking and a 30-minute soak still left plenty of resin. It took three rounds.
Rinse after you smoke and give it a soak on a schedule, and the deep clean stays one round instead of three.

Which glass pipes have a built-in screen?
Four pipes with the screen built into the bowl.
A built-in screen keeps ash and debris out of the airway, which means less gunk to clean out of the stem. These four have one.
Our Screen Bubble Hand Pipe listing says its integrated screen keeps debris out of the airway. The full lineup’s under hand pipes, and our glass pipe guide covers the shapes.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask about cleaning a glass pipe.
How do you clean resin out of a glass pipe?
To clean a glass pipe of resin, bag it with 90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, shake it for a minute or two, and let it soak 30 minutes. Push a pipe cleaner or swab through what’s left, rinse it warm and let it air dry. Heavy resin can take a second or third round.
What is the best solution for cleaning glass pipes?
90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol with coarse salt is the standard. If you’d rather skip alcohol, a cleaner made for it works too: Aneu Simple Soak’s listing says it works on glass hand pipes with no scrubbing.
Can I boil my glass pipe to clean it?
You can, carefully. Sunrise Dispensary’s method is to warm the glass up first, then simmer it gently for about 20 minutes. Never drop a cold pipe into boiling water, because the sudden heat can crack it.
Will vinegar clean a glass pipe?
Yes, for light buildup. Fill the pipe with white vinegar and plug it, as Head Magazine suggests, then rinse. Sunrise Dispensary rates vinegar as weaker than alcohol, so expect a longer soak on heavy resin.
How do you clean a glass pipe without alcohol?
To clean a glass pipe without alcohol, use a dedicated cleaner like Aneu Simple Soak, a white vinegar soak, or a gentle simmer after warming the glass. Then brush out the screen and carb hole and rinse well.
Can you put a glass pipe in the dishwasher?
No. Sunrise Dispensary says a dishwasher can crack glass and leave detergent behind. Clean it by hand instead.
How often should you clean a glass pipe?
Rinse it after each session if you can. Sunrise Dispensary suggests a weekly deep clean for regular smokers and every two weeks for light ones, while Dockside Cannabis says once a month. Go by the glass: visible resin or a harsh pull means it’s time.
