The parts that break first

Bowls and downstems are the parts that break first. Bowls catch the heat — they crack, get stuck, or get dropped. Downstems are slim glass that snaps from a tip-over. Replacing them is way cheaper than replacing the whole bong.

Bowls (slides)

Bowls are the removable piece you pack flower into. Sizes match the joint of your bong (14mm or 18mm). Look for: real glass thickness around the bowl rim, a screen if you don’t want to use a separate one, a grip handle so you don’t burn your hand pulling it.

Downstems

Downstems are the long tube that connects the bowl to the water chamber. Diffused downstems have multiple slits or holes at the bottom — better filtration. Length matters; measure your existing one before ordering.

Match the joint size of your bong (penny test). 14mm female joint = 14mm male bowl. Most modern bongs are 14mm.

Bowl screens — when you need them

A screen prevents ground flower from pulling through into your mouth or down into the water. Most bowls have a small hole at the bottom that works as a “flower trap” — properly ground flower (medium-fine, not powder) won’t pass. Add a screen if:

• You grind too fine and flower keeps falling through.
• The bowl has a single big hole instead of a flower trap.
• You want to extend the life of the bowl by reducing resin buildup.

Diffused downstems explained

A standard downstem has one hole at the bottom — smoke comes out as a single big bubble. A diffused downstem has multiple slits or holes, breaking smoke into smaller bubbles. Smaller bubbles = more surface contact with water = more cooling and filtration.

Tree-style diffusers (multiple slits in a row) are the most common. Showerhead diffusers (a circular ring of holes) deliver dense diffusion.

Downstem length

Length runs from where the joint meets the bong, down to the bottom of the diffuser. Most bongs use 3–5 inch downstems. Wrong length matters: too short and the diffuser sits above the water (no filtration); too long and it sits in too much water (drag and splash).

How do I find the right downstem length?

Measure the existing one before replacing. Or measure the distance from the joint to the bottom of the bong’s water chamber, subtract a half inch (you want the diffuser submerged but not touching the bottom).

What’s a 4-hole vs. 9-hole bowl?

Refers to the number of holes at the bottom of the bowl. More holes = better airflow = smoother pull. 9-hole bowls (sometimes “honeycomb bowls”) are popular upgrades.

Are bowls universal?
