More info

The cleaning kit

Cleaning a bong with alcohol and salt is the standard, but doing it right requires a few accessories. Plugs to seal both openings while you shake, brushes for the corners alcohol can’t reach, and a real cleaning solution for stubborn resin.

  • Joint caps / plugs — seal both openings of the bong while you shake. Without them, you make a mess.
  • Pipe brushes — for cleaning bowl pieces, downstems, and tight perc holes.
  • Bong cleaner solution — pre-mixed iso/salt formulas that work faster than DIY.
  • Cotton swabs (Glob Mops) — for cleaning bangers between dabs.

FAQ

Iso + salt vs. commercial bong cleaner — what’s better?

Commercial cleaners are faster (10 minutes vs. shake-and-soak iso), and some don’t need salt. Iso + salt is cheaper and works on everything. Most regular smokers use iso + salt and switch to commercial cleaners for stubborn pieces.

How often should I clean a bong?

Change water every session. Full clean once a week minimum if you smoke regularly. Sooner if it tastes off.

What strength of isopropyl alcohol?

91% minimum, 99% ideal. The lower the water content, the better it dissolves resin. 70% iso barely works for resin.

Can I use vinegar and baking soda instead?

Yes — it’s the alternative for people who don’t want to use iso. Slower, less effective on heavy resin, but completely chemical-free. Heat the vinegar first; it works better warm.

Iso alcohol percentage matters

  • 70% iso — barely works on resin. Too much water dilutes the dissolving action.
  • 91% iso — standard for cleaning. Works on most bongs in 5 minutes.
  • 99% iso — fastest cleaning, almost pure alcohol. Worth the small price difference.

Salt grain size

  • Coarse salt (Kosher, sea salt) — best for bong cleaning. Big enough to scrub against resin without dissolving immediately.
  • Table salt — too fine, dissolves in iso fast, less mechanical scrubbing action.
  • Epsom salt — works in a pinch but dissolves faster than coarse salt.

Plug sizes

Bong cleaning plugs come in 14mm and 18mm sizes (and sometimes 10mm for mini rigs). Match to your bong’s joint plus the mouthpiece. Two plugs per cleaning — one for the bowl/joint, one for the mouthpiece. Without plugs, you can’t shake without making a mess.

Brush types

  • Pipe cleaner brushes — flexible, fit through tight perc holes.
  • Bottle brushes — wider, for cleaning bong necks.
  • Cone-shaped brushes — for downstems and bowl pieces.

Can I use vinegar instead of iso?

Yes — heated white vinegar plus baking soda works as a chemical-free alternative. Slower, less effective on heavy resin. Use only when iso isn’t an option.

How do I get smell off my hands after cleaning?

Lemon juice or coffee grounds — both neutralize the resin smell faster than soap.

How often should plugs be replaced?

Silicone plugs last 6–12 months of weekly use before the silicone starts to harden and lose seal. Cheap rubber plugs degrade faster.

Great glass at an amazing price! This tube feels thick and is nice high quality. It hits smooth and has a really nice function. You cannot beat it for $99. It’s an 18mm and comes with a nice bowl piece as well.

I really like this rig but I was expecting it to be a little bigger. The description said 9 inches but I would say it’s more 6 inch range . I attached photo with it next to my 8 inch bubbler to show size. Most of my rigs are 4 to 6 inch range. I just wanted something a bit bigger. If was looking for something in the 6 inch range. This would be perfect. I would recommend downsizing to a 10 mm adapter. It’s not a necessity but I feel it makes the draw smoother but it’s a great rig for $100 price point. It seems to be built well and have enough to be used with an Enail.
