The missing pieces
What does a dab rig kit leave out?
Two things you can’t dab without, and one you’ll want soon.
None of our kits include a torch or a dab tool, and GRAV’s banger sets leave them out too. Plan on a butane torch, a dab tool and cleaning supplies before your first session.
- A butane torch. A lighter won’t cut it. Use butane, not propane, which GRAV says burns too hot for quartz. Our best torch for dabs guide compares the options.

The decision
Flat top kit or slurper kit: which should you pick?
Same rig size, two different ways to run the banger.
Pick the flat top kit if you’d like pearls you can watch spin under a cap. Pick a slurper kit if you’d rather have the marble-and-pillar setup that slurper bangers are built around.

The setup
How do you set up a dab rig kit?
From the box to your first dab.
Add water, seat the banger in the joint, heat it with a butane torch, let it cool to your dab temperature, drop in the pearls or pillar and the dab, then cap it and pull slow.
- Add water. Cover the percolator or the cuts at the bottom of the downstem, and that’s enough.
- Seat the banger. It goes in the rig’s joint the same way a bowl does.
- Heat it. Torch the banger while it’s empty. Nothing goes in until it’s heated.

- Load and cap it. Pearls or the pillar go in, then the dab, then the cap or marble.
- Pull slow. The cap keeps the vapor in the banger instead of letting it float off.
From the Counter — what I’d hand a first-timer
Get the Mini Dab Rig Starter Bundle. Flat tops are easier than slurpers for beginners because they’re easier to clean. A Q-tip does a flat top, while a slurper really needs a dunk in iso to get clean.
For a torch, I use the Blazer Big Shot. If you want something cheaper, get a Scorch torch that looks and feels like a Big Shot.
Then it’s simple. Torch the banger, let it cool to around 475°F, drop the pearls and the dab in, cap it and pull.
The disagreement
Why isn’t a complete kit actually complete?
What the “everything you need” label skips.
A dab rig kit sold as everything you need can still leave out the torch and the dab tool, the two pieces you can’t start without. Read the contents list, not the label.
Why most guides get this wrong: “complete” means glass, not gear
Kit listings say “everything you need,” and our own Starter Bundle listing says it too. What it covers is the glass and quartz. GRAV’s starter guide says the same about its banger sets: just add a torch and a dab tool.
Some sellers do bundle a torch. So check the contents list and budget for whatever’s missing. A kit that shows up without a torch is a rig you can look at, not one you can use.
