Best Ash Catcher: Wet vs Dry, 45 vs 90 Degree, and How to Choose

Best Ash Catcher: Wet vs Dry, 45 vs 90 Degree, and How to Choose

Roots Glass ash catchers: 14/45 Showerhead, 14/45 Tree Perc, 14mm Matrix and the Dry Catcher on white

Most ash catcher guides focus on the percolator type. The decision that matters more: the angle.

45° ash catchers work with beaker bongs and most standard water pipes — the angled joint keeps the catcher level. 90° catchers are for straight tube bongs. Buy the wrong angle and the catcher either tilts water toward you or stresses the joint every pull.

After the angle, the call is wet versus dry. Wet ash catchers use a percolator for extra filtration. Dry catchers just collect ash and debris to keep your glass bong cleaner. Dry catchers clean in seconds; wet catchers filter better.

Quick Answer: An ash catcher attaches between your bong and bowl to catch ash and resin before it reaches the main chamber. Get a wet (percolated) ash catcher for smoother hits and better filtration. Get a dry ash catcher if you just want to keep your bong cleaner without extra drag. Match joint size + angle to your bong (typically 14mm 45°).

How do you pick the right ash catcher?

Joint angle is the one that catches people. Beaker bongs and most water pipes take a 45° catcher. Straight tube bongs take a 90°. Get it backwards and the catcher is unusable. Every Roots Glass ash catcher is labeled with its angle in the product name.

Joint size: 14mm is the standard. Some larger or older pieces use 18mm. The Showerhead, Tree Perc, Showerhead Can and Matrix are 14mm only. The Deluxe Showerhead, Honeycomb, Thick Tree Perc and Swiss Perc each come in an 18mm option, and both dry catchers offer 18/90.

Wet vs dry is a maintenance call. Wet catchers add a second water filtration stage — hits are noticeably smoother. The tradeoff: the catcher needs its own cleaning cycle. Dry catchers just catch debris — easy to empty, no extra cleaning. Want better filtration? Go wet. Want longer time between cleans? Go dry.

What’s the best wet ash catcher?

Wet ash catchers add a percolator stage — smoke filters through water in the catcher before it hits the main chamber. Eight options here. The Showerhead, Tree Perc, Showerhead Can and Matrix are 14mm only; the Deluxe Showerhead, Honeycomb, Thick Tree Perc and Swiss Perc each add an 18mm option for larger joints.

Roots Glass 14/45 Showerhead Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14/45 Showerhead Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14/45 Showerhead Ash Catcher

$24.99 — 14mm, 45°

The entry point. Showerhead perc distributes smoke across multiple slits for even diffusion — more thorough than a basic downstem. 45° angle fits most bong setups. The right starting point for anyone adding an ash catcher for the first time.

Roots Glass 14/45 Tree Perc Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14/45 Tree Perc Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14/45 Tree Perc Ash Catcher

$24.99 — 14mm, 45°

Same price, more arms. The tree perc creates more smoke-to-water contact than the showerhead — the pick for heavy daily use when maximum pre-filtration matters. Still 14mm and 45°, compatible with any standard beaker setup.

Roots Glass Deluxe Showerhead Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Deluxe Showerhead Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Deluxe Showerhead Ash Catcher

$29.99 — 14mm or 18mm | 45° or 90°

The most versatile option in the lineup. Available in 14/45, 14/90, and 18/90 — right call if you need a wet catcher for a straight tube or an 18mm joint. Larger chamber than the entry model for more water volume.

Roots Glass 14mm Matrix Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14mm Matrix Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14mm Matrix Ash Catcher

$29.99 — 14mm | 45° or 90°

Matrix percolator creates dozens of water contact points — the most thorough filtration in the lineup. Available in 14/45 or 14/90. Best for flavor-focused setups that run through dab rigs or heavy-use bongs.

Roots Glass 14/45 Showerhead Can Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14/45 Showerhead Can Ash Catcher

Roots Glass 14/45 Showerhead Can Ash Catcher

$24.99 — 14mm, 45°

The showerhead perc in a can-body chamber. Same slit diffusion as the standard Showerhead and the same 14mm, 45° fitment — pick whichever shape you like sitting on your beaker. Five colors.

Roots Glass Honeycomb Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Honeycomb Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Honeycomb Ash Catcher

$39.99 — 14/45, 14/90 or 18/90

A flat disc drilled with a lot of small holes. Smoke splits into many tiny bubbles at once, so you get fast, even filtration and a smooth pull without a ton of drag. Comes in all three fitments, so it works on a beaker or a straight tube.

Roots Glass Thick Tree Perc Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Thick Tree Perc Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Thick Tree Perc Ash Catcher

$39.99 — 14/90 or 18/90 | 90° only

The tree perc in heavier glass — more arms means more smoke-to-water contact than a showerhead. This one is 90° only, so it is a straight tube piece: 14/90, or 18/90 if your bong runs an 18mm joint (that one takes a 14mm bowl).

Roots Glass Swiss Perc Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Swiss Perc Ash Catcher

Roots Glass Swiss Perc Ash Catcher

$44.99 — 14/45, 14/90 or 18/90

A flat disc drilled with rows of holes. Smoke is forced through all of them at once and breaks into a wall of small bubbles — the heaviest filtration in the lineup. Top of the range, and available in all three fitments.

Why Most Ash Catcher Guides Don’t Mention the Angle

Most ash catcher articles tell you to match the joint angle. Almost none of them tell you why, so when someone gets it wrong they have no way to work out what happened. The bend in an ash catcher exists to cancel out your bong’s joint angle and bring the whole stack back to vertical. Match it and the catcher sits upright. Miss it and the catcher hangs cocked to one side — which throws off your water level and puts a constant bending load on the joint, with a water-filled catcher acting as the lever. A beaker’s joint sits diagonal, so a beaker takes 45°. A straight tube’s joint stands vertical, so it takes 90°. Work from the joint, not the silhouette — that is the part nobody prints.

What’s the best dry ash catcher?

Dry ash catchers add no water or filtration — they just catch ash and debris before it reaches the main chamber. Easier to maintain and compatible with the same bong setups. Right call if you want to stay cleaner without adding extra cleaning steps.

Roots Glass Dry Catcher

Roots Glass Dry Catcher

Roots Glass Dry Catcher

$34.99 — 14/45, 14/90 or 18/90

One dry catcher, three fitments. 14/45 for a beaker, 14/90 for a straight tube, 18/90 if your bong runs an 18mm joint. The flared beaker base keeps it sitting upright instead of hanging off the joint. No percolator and no water changes — just empty it when it fills.

Roots Glass Hourglass Dry Catcher

Roots Glass Hourglass Dry Catcher

Roots Glass Hourglass Dry Catcher

$34.99 — 14mm or 18mm | 45° or 90°

A step-up dry catcher. The hourglass chamber geometry restricts debris more effectively than a straight-chamber catcher. Available in 14/45, 14/90, and 18/90. Best debris collection in the dry category without the water stage.

What is an ash catcher for a bong?

An ash catcher attaches between your bong’s joint and the bowl. It catches ash and debris before they reach the main chamber, keeping your bong cleaner for longer. Wet ash catchers also use a percolator and water to add a second filtration stage; dry ash catchers just collect debris without water.

Do I need a 45 or 90 degree ash catcher?

It depends on your bong. Most beaker bongs and standard water pipes need a 45° ash catcher. Straight tube bongs typically need a 90° ash catcher. Check the angle of the joint where your bowl connects — if it points diagonally back, use 45°; if it points straight up, use 90°.

What size ash catcher do I need?

Most modern bongs use a 14mm joint, so a 14mm ash catcher is the standard choice. Some larger bongs use 18mm joints. Check your bong’s specs or measure the joint. Most of our wet ash catchers are 14mm, but the Deluxe Showerhead, Honeycomb, Thick Tree Perc and Swiss Perc also come in 18mm, and both dry catchers offer 18/90.

Does an ash catcher make a bong hit smoother?

A wet ash catcher with a percolator adds a second water filtration stage — hits are noticeably smoother and cooler. A dry ash catcher doesn’t add filtration; it just keeps the chamber cleaner, which helps maintain the bong’s baseline smoothness over time.

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Straight tube bongs have a chamber that fills up quickly and pulls smoke faster when you inhale. Beaker bongs, on the other hand, have a larger water chamber, allowing for more laid-back hits when you tilt them back, but they require a stronger pull when inhaling.
